About this event

The "Ashigara Pass Flute Festival" is a festival associated with the historical tale of Shinra Saburo Yoshimitsu, a warrior of the Heian period, who passed down the secret melodies of the sho (traditional wind instrument) to his disciple Toyohara no Toyoaki at Ashigara Pass. Jointly held by Minamiashigara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, and Oyama Town, Shizuoka Prefecture, the event features a Fuezuka memorial service and a "Tug-of-War Battle for Territory" where both municipalities compete over the territory of Ashigara Pass. Ashigara Pass comes alive with a program packed with highlights, including gagaku (ancient court music) performances, powerful matchlock gun demonstrations, and historical plays based on the surrender of Ashigara Castle. On the day, free servings of jinchu-nabe hotpot will be provided (limited quantities available), and food and drinks will be on sale. It is a festival steeped in history and tradition where the entire community unites in excitement.
