About this event
This is a festival to commemorate the Hoonko memorial service of Higashi Honganji Arai Betsuin and to remember Shinran Shonin and Eshinni-ko. Commonly known as 'Otaya,' it is known as the largest Buddhist event in the Joetsu region. During the period, around 150 stalls line the streets, making it very lively. Additionally, the 'Hokkoku Kaido Arai Jidai Festival' is held annually on November 3, and one of the highlights is a grand parade through the city by a troop clad in handmade armor. Furthermore, chrysanthemum exhibitions and children's processions (chigo gyoretsu) are also held, making it an event where visitors can feel the traditions and vitality deeply rooted in the local community.
