Omicho Market Crab Hot Pot Festival
Japanese name:近江町市場 カニ鍋大会
📅 Sat, Nov 14, 2026
About this event
Held every year in conjunction with the opening of the fishing season for Ishikawa Prefecture's Kano crab and Kohako crab, the "Omicho Market Crab Hot Pot Festival" features sales of "kani-jiru" (crab soup) to savor seasonal delicacies. Snow crab fishing opens on November 6, and the season's first catch arrives at the market the following day on November 7. This event is a longstanding tradition of Omicho Market—the historic "Kitchen of Kanazawa Residents"—allowing visitors to taste fresh crab immediately following the season opening. Because fishing periods are strictly regulated for resource conservation, this is a precious opportunity to taste the peak season flavor in crab soup right after the November 6 opening. The fishing period for male Kano crab runs until around March 20, while female Kohako crab runs until December 31. Quantities are limited, so lining up before the 11:00 AM start time is recommended. Looking through the fishmonger stalls inside the market while waiting is another fun part of the experience.
