Archaeological Museum Special Exhibition 2: Four Major Castle Sites of Okaya City - Looking Out Over War-Torn Shinano -
Japanese name:考古美術館企画展2 岡谷市四大城址-戦乱の信濃を望む-
📅 Thu, Jul 16, 2026 - Sun, Sep 13, 2026
About this event
From the Kamakura period onward, powerful samurai rose to prominence in Shinano Province, and mountain castles were constructed even in present-day Okaya City as strongholds for defense and control. This exhibition highlights four mountain castle sites: Hanaoka Castle Site, Osaka Castle Site, Takaosan Castle Site, and Minehata Castle Site. Through castle layout maps ("nawabari-zu") essential for understanding mountain castles, photographs capturing their present state, and castle reconstruction diagrams, the exhibition introduces the appearance of medieval castles and the turbulent history of Shinano heading into the Sengoku (Warring States) period. Visitors can connect with history while picturing the castle appearances of that era.
