Red Buckwheat Village Festival
Japanese name:赤そばの里祭り
📅 Sat, Sep 19, 2026 - Sun, Oct 11, 2026
About this event
In Minowa Town, Nagano Prefecture, a vast 4.2-hectare field located at an elevation of 900 meters is covered with fully blooming red buckwheat flowers. A beautiful landscape spreads out as if laid with a red carpet, captivating many tourists and photographers. This red buckwheat variety is called "Takane Ruby," bred from a strain brought back from an elevation of 3,800 meters in the Himalayas. Because the pink hue deepens as temperatures drop, visitors can enjoy more vibrant flowers later in the festival period. Coinciding with the peak blooming season of red buckwheat flowers, the new buckwheat (shin-soba) season begins across Shinshu, and buckwheat noodle shops near the red buckwheat flower fields offer noodles made from red buckwheat for a limited time. Unlike regular soba, red buckwheat soba features a distinct character and strong, firm texture. It is truly a crop that offers double the enjoyment: admiring the beautiful flowers and subsequently savoring the harvested red buckwheat noodles. Throughout the event period, visitors can enjoy picturesque, art-like scenery created by the red buckwheat flower fields and the surrounding natural open skies.
