About this event

The Hada Festival is one of the three major festivals of Toyohashi and the festival of Hada Hachimangu Shrine, which is said to have been founded in the first year of Hakuho (672). It is held annually over two days on the first Saturday and Sunday of October, with shrine parishioners dedicating tezutsu hanabi (handheld cylinder fireworks). On Saturday, fireworks are dedicated within the grounds of Hada Hachimangu Shrine, and on Sunday, at Matsuba Park, which serves as the Otabisho (temporary resting place of the shrine deity). The sight of approximately 700 tezutsu fireworks and ozutsu (large cylinder) fireworks dedicated across both days is breathtaking. Tezutsu hanabi, unique to the Higashi-Mikawa region, are heroic fireworks performed while men hold 4-5 kg cylinders packed with gunpowder in their arms; the shower of sparks, deafening roar, and courageous figures of the men are deeply moving. As a traditional festival praying for bumper crops, it attracts many visitors.
