About this event

At the Autumn Kagura Festival of Ise Jingu, which offers prayers of thanksgiving for divine favor and for national peace, Jingu Bugaku (sacred dance and music) is performed on a special stage in the Naiku Shin-en garden, alongside dedicated performing arts from all over the country. In addition, on the night of the Mid-Autumn Moon, the "Jingu Kangetsukai" (Moon-viewing gathering) is held at the Magatama Pond of Geku. Outstanding tanka and haiku poems submitted from across Japan are recited by Jingu musicians in the traditional ancient style, followed by performances of Kangen (instrumental music) and Bugaku. It is an elegant event heralding the arrival of autumn in Ise, with the dedicated stage by the pond bathed in moonlight. Along with the moon-viewing gathering, the Ise City Tourist Association also hosts a Moon-Viewing Tea Ceremony, serving tea to tourists and local citizens. On that day, with permission from the shrine, visiting hours at Geku are specially extended.
