The Saito Goma ritual originates from the Buddhist monk Shobo Rigen Daishi, who, upon receiving an imperial order from Emperor Uda to subjugate a venomous serpent, performed a Buddhist service at Mount Omine in southern Nara Prefecture by burning firewood gathered in the mountains instead of using traditional ritual implements. As High Priest Joa of Ryosen-ji Temple devoted himself to the restoration of Mount Omine following Rigen Daishi, Ryosen-ji continues to conduct the Saito Goma ritual in its ancient form, praying for peace across the realm, prosperity for all people, and the warding off of disasters. *Details are subject to change depending on circumstances.
