About this event
At the "Special Exhibition: Great Frog Exhibition" held at the Wakayama Prefectural Museum of Natural History, all 54 species (and subspecies) of frogs inhabiting Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa, are brought together in one place. Through specimens and live exhibits, the exhibition introduces the diverse forms of frogs, ranging from familiar species like the Japanese wrinkled frog (tsuchigaeru) and black-spotted pond frog (tonosamagaeru) to rare ones such as the cane toad (oohikigaeru) and the Tago's brown frog subspecies (himetagogaeru). Visitors can experience the wondrous charms of frogs through explanations of fundamental frog biology, the ecology of frogs across Japan, and the current status of endangered endemic Japanese species. Frogs readily diverge into distinct species by region and develop remarkable diversity, allowing visitors to encounter a wide variety of appearances—from brown to green, and from slender to plump body shapes. This event provides an opportunity to learn about the richness of Japan's nature while deepening understanding of the crises currently facing frogs.
