About this event
This is a heroic festival that has been passed down for about 400 years. An 8-meter-high scaffold (yagura) is erected in the sea in front of the Grand Torii Gate of Itsukushima Shrine, and young men form human pyramids and leap to vie for the sacred jewel of happiness suspended from it. During the Edo period, it was called the Ennen Festival and held in the shrine's worship hall, but it took its current form from the early Meiji period. Along with the Kangen Festival, it is known as a representative summer festival of Itsukushima Shrine.
