32nd National Creative Kokeshi Doll Art Exhibition in Shibukawa

About this event

'Creative kokeshi' are art crafts among the 'modern kokeshi' born in the 1940s and 1950s (Showa 20s) that came to be produced primarily as unique, one-of-a-kind works by artisans. In this exhibition, results of creative activities developed nationwide by many artists, including those designated by the state as 'Contemporary Master Craftsmen' and recipients of the 'Medal with Yellow Ribbon,' come together under one roof. Visitors can enjoy the delicate craftsmanship, beauty, suppleness, cuteness, and visual impact of kokeshi born from the artists' free imagination and creation at the venue. Furthermore, as an art exhibition that is not in a competition format—rare even nationwide—opportunities to speak directly with the artists are provided. As a special project for the 32nd exhibition, the 'Shibukawa Creative Kokeshi Painting Contest,' which exhibits publicly solicited works designed around free themes, will be held concurrently, allowing visitors to see how pure white kokeshi are transformed. Additionally, as an opportunity to experience the world of creative kokeshi, painting workshops will be conducted with advice from kokeshi artisans.
