About this event

This special exhibition focuses on printed kamishibai (picture-story shows) that were created in the early Showa period and widely used from the prewar to postwar eras as tools for education, public enlightenment, and information dissemination. Centering on the precious kamishibai collection preserved by Showakan, the exhibition traces the transition of printed kamishibai from their origin and development to their wartime utilization and postwar fresh start. While street kamishibai gained popularity as entertainment, this exhibition introduces their roles and appeal from multifaceted perspectives, including the history of printed kamishibai produced for educational use, the historical background of their use as a tool for national policy propaganda, and postwar democratization movements with their re-utilization in educational settings. In particular, visitors can enjoy materials related to the kamishibai adaptation of Takashi Nagai's 'Leaving These Children Behind' (Kono Ko o Nokoshite), terminals for viewing the museum's kamishibai collection, and listening to recorded record-kamishibai. During the exhibition period, workshops to make kamishibai stage-style photo frames, exhibition commentary by curators, and live performances by professional kamishibai performers will also be held, providing opportunities to experience the world of kamishibai more deeply.
