Yanaka Encho Festival
Japanese name:谷中圓朝まつり
📅 Sat, Aug 1, 2026 - Mon, Aug 31, 2026
About this event
"Yanaka Encho Festival" is held at Zenshoan Temple, the site of his grave, in memory of Sanyutei Encho, an active master of human-interest stories (ninjo-banashi) and ghost stories (kaidan-banashi) from the late Edo to Meiji periods, revered as the father of modern rakugo and even called a deity of the art. Ghost paintings collected by Encho as reference for creating ghost stories are open to the public (admission fee required). In addition, "Encho Yose," where visitors can enjoy "Encho Original Rakugo" performed by masters of his school, is held during the festival period. This yose is a special event held for only a single night during the month-long Encho Festival held every August (the month of Encho's death). Renowned rakugo performers such as Sanyutei Enkitsu, Sanyutei Koraku, and Sanyutei Enraku perform Encho's original rakugo works. Zenshoan Temple, the venue, is about a 5-minute walk from Sendagi Station on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line.
