About this event
The Fire Quelling Festival (Chinka-sai) held at Fuji Shrine in Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, is a traditional ritual held in August. This festival began in the early Showa period, modeled after the Yoshida Fire Festival of Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine and Suwa Shrine at the foot of Mt. Fuji, as a ritual marking the closing of the climbing season corresponding to Mt. Fuji's mountain opening. After the ritual ceremony, torches stacked in log-cabin style (igeta) are burned, and several bonfires (kagaribi) are also lit within the shrine grounds. It is characterized by being conducted in a quiet and solemn atmosphere without street stalls. Ceremonies marking the mountain closing are rare in the Tokyo area, making this a valuable opportunity to experience local culture and tradition.
