About this event

This retrospective exhibition commemorates the 50th anniversary of the death of Yajuro Takashima (1890-1975), a Western-style painter from Fukuoka Prefecture. After graduating top of his class from the Faculty of Agriculture at Tokyo Imperial University, he chose the path of a painter and taught himself painting. Known as the 'solitary painter,' Takashima did not belong to any specific art group and pursued his unique art without conforming to trends or eras. In addition to his representative works featuring 'Candles' and the 'Moon,' this exhibition sheds light on previously less-featured aspects—such as works shown for the first time, pieces from his youth, and works from his stay in Europe—revealing the complete picture of his art. Furthermore, materials such as letters and notes by people associated with him offer fresh insight into Yajuro Takashima as a person. As the largest retrospective of Yajuro Takashima to date, approximately 170 artworks and documents will be on display. It offers an opportunity to discover a new side of Yajuro Takashima, who had deep ties to Shibuya Ward.
