Downtown Museum Yoji Kuri 100-2 Year Birth Anniversary Retrospective: 'Surprise! Yoji Kuri Wonderland'

This retrospective commemorates the 100-2 year birth anniversary of Yoji Kuri (1928-2024), an artist who laid the foundation for Japanese art animation and demonstrated extraordinary talent across a wide variety of expressive fields including manga, illustration, and painting. This exhibition presents the trajectory of more than 80 years of creative work all at once, ranging from his early manga works and globally acclaimed experimental animations to paintings and drawings produced up until his later years. It explores the multifaceted appeal of Yoji Kuri, who was always ahead of his time and embodied the avant-garde spirit. Furthermore, the experiential program 'Kuri-ism Wonderland Game' will also be featured, allowing visitors to tour the worlds of manga, animation, painting, sculpture, and picture books 'as if playing a game,' fully cruising through the humorous and wondrous world of Kuri-ism.
