About this event
This exhibition introduces from multiple perspectives how Nihonga painter Shuho Ikegami (1874–1944) approached artistic creation and passed his expression down to his disciples. Born in Nishitakato Town, Chikuma Prefecture (present-day Takato Town, Ina City, Nagano Prefecture), Shuho was active from the Meiji period through the early Showa period as a leading figure of the traditional school (Kyuha) of Nihonga. In addition to finished paintings featuring his signature subjects, the exhibition displays sketches demonstrating his outstanding powers of observation, preparatory drawings repeatedly created for finished works, and personal notebooks kept as creative records. It also exhibits works by disciples with ties to the Nanshin region, such as Shukoku Hosoai and Shuso Hotta, as well as pieces exhibited in traveling exhibitions held in Ina by the Shuho school. The exhibition highlights how Shuho's expression was passed on to his students and focuses on the connections between the Shuho school and the local community built through their activities in Ina.
