About this event

Since the opening of the Hokusai Museum in 1976 (Showa 51), Obuse Town has positioned Hokusai as the core of its cultural and tourism resources, promoting community development under the concept of 'Obuse: The Town of Chestnuts, Hokusai, and Flowers.' In fiscal year 2026 (Reiwa 8), marking the 50th anniversary as 'Obuse, the Town of Hokusai,' a rakugo storytelling event inviting Anko Hayashiya, who performs 'Hokusai's Daughter,' will be held to give people a deeper understanding of Katsushika Hokusai in this milestone year. Although she was Hokusai's daughter, the works and historical materials left by Katsushika Oi are overwhelmingly few compared to Hokusai, as she spent most of her life as his right hand. With what feelings did Oi create her own works, what was the pressure of being the daughter of a father called a genius, and what were her struggles as a female painter? Anko Hayashiya, who herself walks the same path as her father, portrays the half-life of the mysterious female painter Oi through rakugo.
