About this event
This exhibition presents selected works from the valuable bird-and-flower print collection housed at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum (RISD Museum), an American art college, donated by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, wife of businessman John D. Rockefeller Jr. Visitors can fully enjoy the world of beautiful prints featuring flowers and birds by ukiyo-e artists, primarily Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige. In particular, the bird-and-flower print collection assembled by Abby Rockefeller over more than 10 years includes rare works as well as pieces created prior to the Tenpo period, when bird-and-flower prints flourished most. Also on display are masterwork bird-and-flower prints by Hokusai and Hiroshige, as well as 'uchiwa-e' (round fan prints), of which few survive today due to being consumable items. Newly organized 35 years after the 1990 'Rockefeller Ukiyo-e Collection Exhibition', this exhibition conveys the Japanese aesthetics of that era and the charm of ukiyo-e that fascinated a modern American lady through 163 carefully selected ukiyo-e prints out of approximately 700. Highlights include Suzuki Harunobu's 'Begonia with Butterfly and Cat', Ito Jakuchu's 'Rooster and Hen', Hokusai's 'Dayflower and Rooster', and Hiroshige's 'Wild Geese under the Moon'. Related events will also be held, including a lecture entitled 'Hokusai and Hiroshige: Appreciation of Bird-and-Flower Prints and Publishers' and gallery talks by curators.
