Adashino Nenbutsuji Sento Kuyo (Thousand Lantern Memorial)

About this event

Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple originated when Kobo Daishi (Kukai) memorialized the unidentified remains left exposed to the elements in Adashino, which had been a wind-burial site since the Heian period. A memorial service is held by lighting countless candles for approximately 8,000 unmourned souls represented by the gravestones and stone Buddha statues gathered at this site. The temple grounds are enveloped in fantastic candlelight, creating a solemn and beautiful scene. Sutra chanting and lighting offerings are also conducted, providing a precious opportunity to offer quiet prayers.
