About this event
The Emperor Saga Festival is an annual festival deeply associated with Emperor Saga, held every year on the last Sunday of August at Umenomiya Grand Shrine. Based on the legend that Emperor Saga was fond of sumo, the main highlight is the dedication of junior sumo bouts performed by elementary school students. The festival heats up with percussion and brass band performances, followed by traditional Umezu Rokusai Nenbutsu dances and Bon dances performed by the Umezu Rokusai Nenbutsu Preservation Society. Many street stalls will also be set up on the day, making it a traditional festival bustling with locals and tourists that colors the Kyoto summer.
