Nomiyama Kannonji Temple Autumn Grand Festival: Grand Buddhist Service for the Unveiling of the Principal Image
Japanese name:呑山観音寺秋季大祭 本尊御開帳大法会
📅 Sun, Oct 18, 2026
About this event
This is a special Buddhist memorial service held once a year where the principal image of Nomiyama Kannonji Temple, the secret Buddha Senju Kannon Bosatsu (Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara), is unveiled to the public. Those who apply for the Buddhist service can view the principal image up close. During the Grand Buddhist Service for the Unveiling of the Principal Image, the chanting/reading of the 600 volumes of the Great Prajnaparamita Sutra (Dai-hannyakyo Tendoku) and a Goma fire ritual will be solemnly performed. After the service, a mochi-tossing event will be held, followed by a rare opportunity for anyone to enter the inner sanctuary of the main hall to pay direct respects to the principal image. In addition, a lay ordination ceremony (Zaike Tokudo-shiki) is conducted the previous day, allowing participants to deepen their connection with Buddha. Alongside the memorial service, the lively "Nomi-no-Ichi Kannon-Ichi" flea market will also be held, featuring various stalls selling food, vegetables, fruit, miscellaneous goods, accessories, ceramics, and more.
