About this event

On August 20, the day of the Kyubon (Old Lunar Bon festival), the Toro Nagashi (floating lantern ceremony) is held in Itayanagi Town. The sight of approximately 300 floating lanterns drifting down the river surface is solemn and deeply moving to onlookers. This event is held as a memorial service for ancestors. On the day of the event, the floating lantern ceremony takes place at Apple Mall starting at 6:30 PM. In the event that water cannot be drawn into Apple Mall due to water shortage, the lanterns will be arranged and lit with candles to conduct the memorial service. Applications for lanterns are accepted from early August for 1,000 yen at Ryuen-ji, Daizen-ji, Shokyu-ji, Chonen-ji, Myoko-ji, Keiho-ji, Yakuo-ji, and Rensho-in temples in town, as well as at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
