Chuson-ji Temple Chrysanthemum Festival
Japanese name:中尊寺菊まつり
📅 Tue, Oct 20, 2026 - Sun, Nov 15, 2026
About this event
During the autumn foliage season, a showcase of meticulously cultivated chrysanthemums begins on the grounds of Chuson-ji Temple. Chrysanthemums carefully raised by local elementary school students and enthusiasts from neighboring municipalities—including giant chrysanthemums (ogiku), cascading forms (kengai), and multi-flowered thousand-bloom styles (senrinzaki)—are displayed in front of the main hall and along the approach path for competition and judging. A chrysanthemum memorial service (Kiku Kuyo-e) and other events are also held during the festival period. The colorful chrysanthemums adorn the temple grounds, serving as a classic seasonal tradition that heralds the arrival of autumn.
