Motsuji Bush Clover Festival
Japanese name:毛越寺萩まつり
📅 Fri, Sep 25, 2026 - Tue, Oct 20, 2026
About this event
The Motsuji Hagi Festival is held at Motsuji Garden during the peak viewing season for bush clovers (hagi), a quintessential autumn flower. A total of 500 plants across 3 varieties—Miyagino hagi, Shirobana hagi, and Yama hagi—planted on the temple grounds bloom profusely with reddish-purple and other colored flowers on their branches, adding beautiful hues. During the festival period, performances of Ennen no Mai, designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, and special viewings inside the Main Hall are held, conveying traditional Japanese culture and autumn charm to visitors. Although the schedule may change depending on the blooming conditions of the bush clover, visitors can enjoy various events while admiring the bush clover blossoms in Motsuji's beautiful garden usually from late September to mid-October.
