Takasaki Museum of Art Special Exhibition "Beautiful Utopia: The Figures of Modern Japan Who Dreamed of an Ideal Land"
Japanese name:高崎市美術館 企画展「美しいユートピア 理想の地を夢みた近代日本の群像」
📅 Sat, Jul 18, 2026 - Wed, Sep 23, 2026
About this event
This exhibition focuses on people and activities in modern Japan that sought to integrate art, crafts, and architectural design with daily life, dreaming of a "beautiful life" and an "ideal society." Influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement advocated by 19th-century British author William Morris, 20th-century Japanese artists such as Yumeji Takehisa, Kenji Miyazawa, and Shunsuke Matsumoto expressed their respective ideals through their works and movements. Through these art movements and works, the exhibition looks back at the ideals of the era and explores ways to envision the future based on their respective "utopias." Through a wide variety of exhibits including paintings, crafts, and architectural materials, it traces the "forms of utopia" envisioned by modern Japan. It will provide an opportunity to reconsider what a "beautiful life" means, from the past to the future.
