About this event
The Nihonbashi Ebisuko Bettara Market is a traditional event dating back to the Edo period and is cherished as an autumn tradition of Nihonbashi. Centering around Takarada Ebisu Shrine and extending across Horidomecho, Nihonbashi-Honcho 3-chome, and Nihonbashi-Odenmacho, stalls line the streets selling bettarazuke (sweet pickled daikon radish). Around 500 stalls line the area, bustling with specialty bettarazuke vendors as well as shichimi (seven-flavor chili pepper) and traditional candy craft stalls. At night, large lanterns in front of Takarada Ebisu Shrine and over 1,500 lanterns throughout the neighborhood illuminate the area, creating a distinctive night festival atmosphere. The festival's origins trace back to the Ebisu-ko on October 20. In the past, merchants held a market to celebrate the deity Ebisu and sell necessary goods in preparation for the following day; the bettarazuke sold there became famous, giving rise to the name "Bettara Market." The venue remains bustling until late at night with people returning from work and tourists enjoying the festival atmosphere. Children's portable shrines (kodomo mikoshi), adult portable shrines, and Bon Odori folk dancing are also held, further heightening the festival's lively energy.
