About this event

As one of the three major festivals of the Lake Country (Shiga Prefecture) and a Nationally Designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, the 'Otsu Matsuri' is a traditional festival also registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage under 'Yama, Hoko, Yatai float festivals.' The highlight of the festival is the procession of 13 Hikiyama floats, crafted during the Edo period, parading through the town. Regarding the festival schedule, the 'Kujitori-shiki' lottery ceremony to determine the float procession order is held on September 16, and 'Yamatate' (float assembly) takes place on the Sunday one week before the main festival. On Yoimiya (the festival eve), lanterns are lit, casting an enchanting glow over the Hikiyama floats. The main festival is held on the day before Sports Day, where the Hikiyama floats gather in front of Tenson Shrine at 9:00 AM and parade through the town throughout the entire day.
