Yame Fukushima Lantern Puppet Theater
Japanese name:八女福島の燈籠人形
📅 Sun, Sep 20, 2026 - Wed, Sep 23, 2026
About this event
The traditional mechanical puppet theater "Yame Fukushima no Toro Ningyo," passed down for over 280 years, will be held at Fukushima Hachimangu Shrine from September 20 to 23, 2026. Continuing since the mid-Edo period, this puppet theater is performed collaboratively by local residents. The movable stage where the performances take place is a special structure assembled every year without using any nails or clamps, utilizing the techniques of "Yame Fukushima Butsudan," a traditional craft of Yame. In addition to the manipulation of the puppets, Yame's traditional crafts are also utilized in the stage design and costumes, with their sophistication and beauty being among the key highlights. Alongside the puppet performance itself, visitors should also pay attention to the stage, costumes, and the traditional festival music (ohayashi) played by local musicians. The opening performance will be held on Sunday, September 20 starting at 20:00, and the regular performances will take place from Monday, September 21 to Wednesday, September 23 at 13:30, 15:00, 16:30, 19:00, and 20:30 each day. Food stalls will also line the approach to Fukushima Hachimangu Shrine, allowing visitors to enjoy the traditional performing arts amidst a festive atmosphere. Admission is free for everyone.
