📅 Thu, Aug 27, 2026 - Sun, Aug 30, 2026
About this event
The 'Listening to Insects Gathering' (Mushi Kiki no Kai), a traditional event continuing since the Edo period, will be held at Mukojima-Hyakkaen Gardens. During the event period, opening hours are extended until 21:00, featuring displays of singing insects and a 'bug-releasing ceremony' (hochu-shiki) where participants release bell crickets into the garden. Visitors can also enjoy insect craft workshops using wild grasses, traditional water gun play, and the magical evening gardens illuminated by picture lanterns (e-andon) and paper lanterns (bonbori). It is an atmospheric event where you can listen closely to the chirping of insects and feel the transition from late summer to autumn. The bug-releasing ceremony is held daily during the event from 17:00, and insect displays run from 16:00 to 21:00. The insect craft workshop will take place on August 30, and the water gun play on August 29. The lighting of picture lanterns and paper lanterns takes place daily during the period from 18:00 to 21:00.
