About this event
The Annual Grand Festival, the most meaningful festival for Tanzan Shrine, is held every year on November 17, the anniversary of the death of the enshrined deity, Fujiwara no Kamatari. On that day, the ceremony begins at 10:30 AM, followed by a Bugaku dance offering by the Nanto Gakuso in the Ishi-no-Ma of the Main Hall. The autumn foliage reaches its peak during this season, allowing visitors to enjoy the mystical Bugaku performance alongside the beautiful autumn leaves on the shrine grounds. Reflecting the history of Tanzan Shrine where Shinto and Buddhism were harmonized, it is a solemn ceremony that evokes elements of both Shinto deities and Buddhas.
